In a lot of respects, “Fading Out,” the latest single by London guitarist and singer-songwriter Ned Moss, is something of an existential crisis.
Moss’ crisp and precise acoustic guitar performance and whisper-quiet vocal performance in “Fading Out” make this track a perfect fit for fans of John Mayer, one of Moss’ influences along with Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix. The song deals with the psychological nature of human existence, exploring an individual’s inner sense of purpose and meaning. Moss gives the impression he may feel born out of his time – stuck between the past and the future.
Waiting / Under the strawberry moon / Thinking my life came too soon / How about you?
A brief musical interlude separates the previous thought and this one hinting at optimism for reaching a specific spiritual destination. Moss then acknowledges that the world is moving so quickly that it can often feel like we aren’t even seen:
Reaching / Out for something I’ll never know / A shining light on my road / That can never be sold
Everything is changing / And rearranging
if you could see me now / I got a feeling that I’m / Fading away, I’m fading away / I’m fading out
Ned Moss delivers a thoughtful and good-tempered performance in “Fading Out,” blending elements of blues, pop, and rock. His playful and tasteful slide guitar is reminiscent of Duane Allman, Jack Pearson, or Derek Trucks. A keen ear can tell that Moss is serving the song here, but his lead guitar contains an energy that suggests it would be a really powerful experience to be around when he has a chance to let loose.
“Fading Out” is the second single from Ned Moss’ forthcoming self-titled EP. Preceded by the single “So Much More” released earlier this year, the song seeks to acknowledge those with the gift of bringing out the best in those around them.
