Columbus, Ohio-based rapper known as Tieran released his third album They Don’t Get It on February 25, featuring a new music video to accompany the title track. It’s a moody album that roots itself in a place of feeling self-assured, but lonely which lends itself to overarching themes of non-conformity.
The album is described as exploring ideas about “overcoming adversity while pursuing a music career as an outcast; the key being confidence and being true to oneself.” Drawing on out this misfit experience, Tieran makes a good use of the first track (also the title track) being a grounded thesis on the overall theme and feel of the album.
From the opening lyrics, “I’m chasing my dreams / My life is a meme / I’m laughing along and I’m with it / but they don’t get it,” confidence abounds, but the feeling of being ostracized underlays the driving current of the song and the album.
In the music video, there’s an industrial feel to the scenery, as we see Tieran rapping in front of a plain white wall and a ceiling that gives the feel of an abandoned office space. Colored lights flood the space with cool, somber tones that perfectly match the melancholy, yet contemplative feel of the lyrics and melody.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
