Canada’s latest rising pop sensation, artist Olivia Penalva, has returned with her new single, “You Love It” – the second single from her forthcoming EP.
The track comes on the heels of the release of her last singles “Judge Away” & “Ex’s”, as well as her Western Canadian Music Award (WCMA) nominations for Pop Artist of the Year and Breakout Artist of the Year in 2021.
Inviting piano takes the single eventually into a powerful pop anthem, as Penalva sings about the internal battle of not feeling worthy enough of love, apparent in the chorus: “Oh I hate that I don’t look the way that I want / But you love it / Yeah you love it / And I hate when I talk and I can’t seem to stop / But you love it / Yeah you love it / Oh I just wanna see the things you see / Cause I hate that I can’t seem to love me / The way that you love me / Wish I loved me the way that you love me”. Her vocals soar above the track, and we can hear the truth in her voice.
“I think it’s really easy to be hard on ourselves,” shares Penalva. “And in doing that, we tend to forget that other people are capable of loving the parts of ourselves that we hate the most. We convince ourselves that it’s not possible and that we aren’t good enough. But there is someone out there for everyone and hopefully that person can show you just how wonderful you really are.”
She doesn’t end the song without a glimpse of hope: “So give me time ‘cause I believe / I’ve almost found what’s underneath,” she sings during the bridge.
