Need to update your springtime playlists? Look no further than “Blue Dolphin,” experimental dream pop group Pine Barons’ latest release as of Tuesday, April 11th.
The track is the follow up single to “Frantic Francis,” which dropped the last day of February, and continues its predecessor’s journey down a whimsical new path for the group. While “Frantic Francis” transported listeners to their childhood selves and powerfully conveyed the blissful ignorance and simple concerns of those early days, the new single beckons you to converse with someone who has reached the end of their journey in this life.
“‘Blue Dolphin’ is a conversation with a ghost, talking them through to the other side, helping them find their silent island,” describes frontperson & multi-instrumentalist KC Abrams. “Everything in the water, sinks in the water.”
But the group clearly doesn’t consider an encounter with the deceased to be a scary or depressing experience. The story is delivered with ear candy at every turn, starting with a lovely split-intro and accentuated by engaging pops of musical color. Listeners will find themselves feeling nostalgic for an out-of-this world encounter like no other.
Listeners should also be sure to check out the music video for the track below, directed by Alex Bebee. In what can be best described as found footage snippets and clever shots of the band performing at physical “crossing points” like bridges and railroad tracks, the group floats through the song in style.
