Maryland based electronic duo, Pink Elefants (consisting of longtime friends Finch and Illeven), are back with their latest 8-bit inspired single “Shy Guy”.
Given the glitchy, minimalism used in the tracks production and samples pulled directly from the sound effects of the “Super Mario” franchise (particularly the classic descending pipe sound), the title and album art seem to point towards the masked minion known as Shy Guy. While these characters are more often on the sidelines, we get to see a more confident tone for the character here as they use their mumble-rap flow to speak from their point of view.
In that sense, the mumble stylings work well to signify a more introverted character who hides behind a mask. It adds to the character’s level of mystique in a way that is engaging and reworks their sense of style into something more contemporary. Musically, the track is cool and dynamic offering a nice flow that is simultaneously propulsive and slightly off-kilter. Good on Pink Elefants to shine a light on this weird little “Shy Guy” and his mysterious identity, motives, and intentions.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
