San Diego-based indie songwriter, Ry August, is back with his first single of 2023, “red flags.” This alt-pop tune addresses his own “red flags”, and how it affects his own identity.
While Ry August, or Ryan Keith Spencer, is an artist and songwriter, the Balitmore-native is also works as a graphic designer, videographer, and content creator. His influences range from indie to hip-hop/ rap, which is evident in his new single, “red flags.”
“Red flags” has a cinematic quality to it; the production mirrors the internal struggle that August discusses in the song. With pounding drums, August’s powerful voice, and incredible lyricism, the song is geared towards intense self-reflection.
“I have been more aware of the red flags in my life lately and I wanted to write a song about facing your truth and eliminating any negative habits, thoughts, people, etc in your life,” wrote Ry August. “I am determined to keep chasing the highest version of myself. This song has a darkness to it but also brings an energy and honesty that I hope motivates others to become more self aware in their own lives and strive to be the best you.”
