The Baltimore-based pop punk band, Silent Film, just released their new album “The heartbreaker” with the slamming guitars and driving drums marking a garage-sounding band on the rise.
With the opening track “takeover usa,” Silent Film plays with a heavily syncopated riff that melds off-kilter, chugging power chords with strong vocal and lead guitar hooks that seamlessly play in and around this rhythmic jungle gym.
As they proceed into the chorus, the power chords fill the space in a grand way, giving lead singer, Matt Parsons, plenty of space to wail the exacerbated and oft-repeated lyrics, “Take over everything / And the money we make will wash it all away.” Overall, this song stands out with its distinguished use of a dancing lead guitar line that transforms the larger chord structures into shoegaze territory, but with funky rhythms leading the way.
Silent Film has been rocking and melting faces for over 15 years, touring and playing with bands like All Time Low, Motion City Soundtrack, Third Eye Blind and many others, and the sound of this new album shows off the array of influences that they enlist.
Additionally, Parsons was featured on All Time Low’s first album, providing additional vocals for the song “The Girl’s a Straight-Up Hustler,” giving the band some major professional chops. With this new album, they are poised for a major come-up moment, and we’ll be looking forward to seeing where this momentum takes them.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
