Philadelphia based post-punk band, Stud Count, are gearing up the for the release of their eponymous debut album with the leading single and music video “Through My Window”. Tinted in somber tones, the video has the nostalgic flare of cataloguing teenage summer romances.
“We wrote the song about growing up and recognizing the things we unlearn as we mature in relationships” recounts lead singer, Norelle Green, “When I was a kid, I thought like a kid, but now that I’m grown, I think like I’m grown. There’s something precious found in the intimacy of commitment with one person, I’m blessed to have found that.”
As we watch the band play through the song in a tight living room space, we see Green cycle through a few of her past romances with people who were clearly not worth the time spent. Dressed in masks to display their sense of fakeness, we finally see a person with their actual face exposed at the end who eventually makes his way into the house as well. Perhaps this time around, things will be different with someone who isn’t masked as someone else.
“You’ve been introduced to the memories of my younger mind” Green sings in the opening verse laying her mental state bare, “I let you see through the window”. As she continues to take the risk of opening up her vault of bad memories, the band rocks into the night bringing a sense of energized retrospection that feels ready for a more stable future.
Stud Count’s influences include Wipers, Garbage, and Husker Dü, so if you’re a fan of these bands then Stud Count is for you. “Though My Window” is available on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music along with 11 more tracks from Stud Count’s brand new self-titled album released via Smartpunk Records. Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
