Indie pop musician, Blu Jay, is caught in a daydream with her latest single “Loose State of Mind” which will be released on Friday, April 29, 2022.
Pulling from a similar catalogue of sound as artists like Marina Diamondis, Billie Eillish, and Lorde, this is a song that enjoys a more minimalist approach with sparse, ambient synthesizers that underlay digitized vocals. It wanders and bumps around like a walk through a misty forest with no clear sense of direction. Yet, it feels very full in the sense that there are dense and hazy thoughts coming through the lyrics that capture a twist of frustration and sadness.
She notes that this new song, “highlights the turmoil that comes with heartbreak, specifically high school heartbreak. “Loose State of Mind” brings forth the passions associated with first love”. It’s written from the viewpoint of reminiscing and choosing to overlook the truth to find the good in your memories. It displays those good moments and how quickly it can all change in a heartbeat, questioning if they ever happened in the first place.
Overall, it’s a song that feels nonchalant, but oozes with overflowing feelings. Behind the chill exterior of the backbeat and synthesizers, there is something boiling that could have consequences if left unattended. Despite the dreamy, detached sort of feel that Blu Jay manages with this song, it is entirely driven by emotions and passion.

His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
