The indie rockers known as The Best Around channel their best Beck impressions with their new single “Kissing Your Ass”. With some weird, but compelling sounds vibrating against a steady backbeat, there’s something lively that comes through each note as uniquely individualized and genre-defying.
Driven primarily by the drums and bass, the guitar and synthesizers offer some whacky sounds that push the rock anthem feel into a funkier space that at once sly and psychedelic. There’s a swagger to the song that rests in the bouncy melodies and quick rhymes. There’s something in the melding of indie rock aesthetics and pop sensibilities that manages a hip hop-esque groove without being too on the nose about it.
In fact, there are so many genre influences in the mix, it’s best to keep it simple and just say that this is a song that feels good because of how expansive it is. It covers a lot of ground while delivering memorable choruses and hooks that pry at the brain and egg the body into a gentle swaying action. Despite the underlying break up anthem, there’s plenty of fun to be had as The Best Around find a new way to move through pain with unrelenting musical fun.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
