Nashville power-trio, The Foxies, are paving the way towards the release of their new album, Who Are You Now, Who Were You Then?, with the cinematic single and music video for “If Life Were A Movie”. Combining elements of synth pop and pop punk, you get the driving energy of the drums and chugging guitar with a twist of synthesized ambience that twinkles mysteriously in the background.
“When I listen to this song, I see a horror rom com. It’s built around the cynicism I have from giving so much love and somehow never being able to have it reciprocated” says vocalist, Julia Bullock, “So, in a movie… all my exes would be killed off first, and nobody wants to be that guy”.
The visuals follow suit to a more abstract degree. Most of the shots feature the full band playing in a visually captivating sets with neon lights, projections, and checkered floor patterns. Meanwhile, there are brief shifts where we see Bullock posing for photo and video shoots. In a meta way, we get to see the band in the process of making this horror rom com that Bullock fantasizes about, and while a fully fleshed out narrative is not at the forefront of the video, you can feel the gritty energy she cites as she snarls and sings to the camera with electricity in her eyes – phasers set to kill at any moment.
“A horror movie death can be both silly and satisfying, simultaneously” says guitarist Jake Ohlbaum, “If anything, ‘If Life Were a Movie’ should mean ‘If MY life were a movie, I’d be the protagonist. I’d be the hero, you’d be the bad guy, and even though my broken heart comes with some great character development, it’s still your fault, and now you gotta go. Sorry, not sorry’”.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
