The Restatements told Alchemical Records that three of its core members formed while attending law school, not to worry though. Their content doesn’t seem to feature THAT much legal jargon. Their newest Single “Suckerpunch” is a spring break anthem for the music lover trying to have a good time, with a little motivation thrown in.
The DC group says that the track is about “Intensity and conviction”. So they aimed to match the kind of excitement they get from their live shows onto a 3-minute jam while also coming up with a memorable hook and chorus. Suckerpunch sounds like someone should be chasing you while it’s playing, the tiger on the cover art might be adding to this feeling. The song has got a sense of urgency to it – with lyrics proclaiming that “the world is mine” that urgency comes from our narrator’s drive.
That same vocal line turns out to be the earworm that listeners won’t mind getting stuck in their heads. J.R Molm flexes consistent high notes throughout the song, but It’s that line specifically that’ll get your head bobbing halfway through your morning meeting. With a glide to the top of the tenor vocal rage, it makes one recall the “Immigrant Song”, though with vocals more aligned with a Nick Jonas or Miley Cyrus. Along with strong vocals, Jarred Barlow’s distorted Bassline carries the groove while Zach Hawkins’ snarling guitar/wah pedal combo chugs through the verses and soars during the solo.
Suckerpunch is probably the ‘heaviest’ track by the group. Most of their work on their “Million Different Things” album is tamer by comparison. Though what hasn’t changed is the lightheartedness in the tone and attention to musicality. There are complex moments that jump out on second and third listens.
