There is an exceptional sweetness to the latest single, “Ruby Tail Lights” by multi-instrumentalist songwriter, producer, and recording artist, Henry Mittnacht (Hank Midnight).
Singing in almost a whisper in “Ruby Tail Lights”, Midnight croons lines that provoke immediate familiarity through specific mention of sights and smells, such as, “I love you sweet smell of pine,” and “Someone, tell me how to find the lavender pier near the nude beach.” Containing a significant number of precise descriptions throughout the song, listeners are quickly transported between their own memories and the environments presented by Midnight.
Filmed in Biartiz, France, the music video reinforces the sentimentality felt by those who encounter “Ruby Tail Lights” and Midnight’s Indie Folk offerings compared to artists like Beirut, Sufjan Stevens, and Sam Evian. Acting as a lyric video while also shot in part like a home video, the film continues to place listeners between worlds as the unfamiliar merge with the unfamiliar for a one-of-a-kind shared experience with the artist. Imparting the sensations of relaxing on the beach on a warm Spring day, “Ruby Tail Lights” is worth listening to again, worth watching again, and doing so is a truly effective (and inexpensive) way to take an impromtu vacation.
