Los Angeles-based actor and songwriter, Al Calderon, takes steps into the spotlight with his latest single “Center of Attention”. Co-written and produced by The Orphanage duo, Trevor Brown and Zaire Koalo, it struts with confidence taking inspiration from early 2000’s R&B.
The song immediately subverts expectations with lyrical play making it clear that the center of attention that Calderon is interested in being revolves around a singular person rather than a loving horde. “Let me be your center of attention” he sings in the opening line of the chorus, “Nothing that I wouldn’t do to get some focus from you.”
Calderon and company manage to capture a specific blend of “cool” with this song that feels lively and romantic. At the same time that it sets itself on the shoulders of R&B, it’s pop stylings also call back to the infectious melodies and choreography of NSYNC.
“It was a very nostalgic feeling, bringing out the sounds of the 2000s– while we were still creating something with a very current ‘feel,’ a lot of the production in the track reminds me of Timbaland’s collab with Justin Timberlake during that time period. We [Al Calderon, Trevor Brown, and Zaire Koalo] started freestyling melodies– they are such incredible sounding boards that writing with them is easy and they’re great about validating my ideas.”

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
