Boston, Massachusetts based punk rockers known as The Worst are back again with a new music video for their single “Monomania. This is the third single off their forthcoming album Yes Regrets due to be released on June 3.
Taking place among snowy mountains, there is a sense of urgency that pulses through the entirety of the video as we see frontwoman, Brooke Binion, running frantically through the trees after stealing an old, black pocket watch from a store. Aided in part by the fuzzy, electric tones of the music, she stumbles and falls through the snow eventually dropping her newfound treasure.
Just as a feeling of defeat starts to settle in, the video starts to retrograde – playing all of the previous footate of Binion running through the mountains now playing in reverse. In a way, it can be read as a playful ode to the upcoming album title – perhaps she has some regrets about stealing this pocket watch. Eventually the footage reversal sees her put the trinket back on the shelf of the store, perhaps allowing for a sense of relief and closure as the video comes to an end.
It’s difficult to tell whether this is literally happening in the story, or the retrograde is more symbolic of Binion’s thought process and emotive state, but time and refelction play a big role thematically throughout the video both literally (pocket watch and mirrors are present throughout her run in the forest) and figuratively (wishing to turn back the clock and facing bad character traits).
Overall, this is a wonderful effort that pushes punk rock energy into an abstract narrative that allows for individual interpretations, so let us know what you think of it!
