DC based indie rock band, Tired All The Time (TATT for short), has released another new single “Then and There” which drips with synthesizers and digitized vocals.
If you took Daft Punk’s approach to vocals and layered your typical indie rock band instrumentation underneath it (like The Wallflowers or Weezer, for example), you would arrive at this song immediately. It pulls from a variety of different influences that spans multiple genres in way that is expansive. At its core, the punk spirit is still alive as TATT laments the day-to-day struggle of dealing with late-stage capitalism with lyrics like “Short life spent on wasted talent / work life balance, don’t fight progress”.
Talking about some of the inspiration for this song, TATT contemplates, “What are we doing? Who are we becoming? When’s lunch? Big picture questions for us all but also the questions that guided the creation of Then and There. Our latest effort hopes to bring the dream like quality of the work/recreation cycle into focus. Are we bound to relitigate questions of previous potential or is the eternal recurrence a great wheel slowly grinding us to dust?”
This is a pretty sizable effort for TATT as they arrive at a sound that is simultaneously unique, yet familiar – uncanny is the word that comes to mind when I think about the kind of genre overlap it achieves. Beneath it is a cry for help, “What a day of who, what, when, and where / It plays again again again…” but it gets caught up in an echo chamber doomed to repeat ad infinitum.
