Canadian singer-songwriter VENNA finds inspiration in both contemporary pop and classical poetry.
VENNA, also known as Shay Esposito, has been writing music since age 12. She released her first full-length album at just 16, “For Annie”, for which she became the youngest winner of the Rawlco Radio 10k/20 grant. She released her second full album at 19, “Sunday”. In the 5 years since then, her work has been met with rave reviews, winning the Electronic/Dance category of the UK Songwriting Competition and becoming a 3-time Edmonton Music Award Nominee, a St Albert’s Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Award Nominee, and Top 5 finalist in Canada’s It’s Your Shot.
VENNA’s latest release “Nirvana” employs meaningful lyricism to display the message of using somebody to perpetuate self-abuse.
“Inspired by the concept of masochism as a defense mechanism, it’s about choosing to continue an unhealthy relationship because gratification provides a sense of control,” she says.
The sound draws from classic poets, fantasy literature, and countless powerful women bringing “anti-pop” to the forefront of music culture, VENNA hopes to inspire thought, emotion, and reflection in her music.
