DC based alternative rock band, No One Sphere, released their debut album Isn’t Everything About Something along with a series of music videos which includes one for “Twin Coasts”, which acts as the opener for the record. Written by Dave Mann and produced by Jarrett Nicolay, Isn’t Everything About Something was Recorded at Mixtape Studios in Alexandria, Virginia, and is an album that pays heavy homage to 90’s alternative/indie rock.
Sporting a vintage tint on every shot, the music video is a montage of outdoor activities like surfing, biking, and general debauchery taking place near a beach. With a notable lack of smart phones and technology aside from cars, it has a clear sense of nostalgia for a time when people would gather for the sake of being with each other – when going to play outside was the primary way of escaping the house.
Musically, the band repeatedly comes back to the lyrical motif “Is this real?” as if to ask whether these good times of the past happened or if they were simply imagined. There is a yearning for a past that no longer exists and it seems we’ve come to far a distance to reasonably turn back. As the melancholy vocals drift upon an ocean of electric guitar, the song daydreams and wanders with no clear destination in mind. Reminiscent summer vibes reign supreme as they drive along deserts and coasts.

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
