Yana Rose’s “I Should Just Shut Up” epitomizes a recurring thought one can have when it feels like no one is listening, and this new single will make you feel less alone.
We are met with emotive piano and Rose’s dreamy vocals; as the song progresses, it opens up to more experimental sounds and a chill bassline, leading to a bridge that brings her following words to the forefront.
Rose is a 23 year old independent singer/songwriter from Traverse City, Michigan who has been writing music for as long as she can remember, giving her an outlet to express life’s everyday emotions. As heard in this track, she is heavily inspired by the artists Billie Eilish, Sasha Sloan, and ROLE MODEL – “The production was heavily inspired by ROLE MODEL’s song ‘six speed,’” she says.
“I started writing this back in April after living in L.A. for a few months and feeling overwhelmed by everything new,” she says. “All at once it felt like the weight of existing along with all my insecurities culminated into this song.”
Rose says that a lot of the lyrics from this song came from poems she had written throughout the past few months. “I don’t like the sound of my voice / I don’t like my silhouette / You should talk about yourself more / Whenever I do it ends in regret,” she sings. “I’ve said too much / I shouldn’t open up / I’m not ungrateful / I should just shut up”. Her raw songwriting paired with easygoing pop is a perfect combination.
