Afro-Carribbean artist and composer, Yasser Tejeda, is celebrating the release of his new album, La Madrugá, with calm, bouncing grooves of the new single “Tú Ere’ Bonita.”
He uses this song as an opportunity to turn his focus and praise towards the beauty, power, and connective nature of women. The song’s title becomes a repetitive mantra that powers through the song’s core and constantly affirms the beauty found in all aspects of womanhood. With a gentle, yet rhythmically complex drive from the guitar, drums, and saxophone, the music provides plenty of danceable flavor that let Tejada’s vocals to soar with ease. Along with a beautiful music video featuring women dancing both in a group and as individuals, the samba-esque grooves feel propulsive and full of life
“I was inspired by a traditional chant of a style called Salve from San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic,” says Tejeda of the track. “It’s a historic genre and style that was adopted as tradition from our Afro-Dominican ancestry. The song is an affirmation of the beauty of women as lovers, caregivers, and caretakers and shows how a woman’s powerful strength is connected with nature; ocean, rivers, the moon, and the universe.”

Charlie Maybee is a dancer, musician, educator, and writer based in Charleston, South Carolina who currently teaches with the Dance Program at the College of Charleston. His primary work as an artist is with his performing collective, Polymath Performance Project, through which he makes interdisciplinary performance art that centers tap dance as the primary medium of expression and research. He also currently plays rhythm guitar for the Charleston-based punk band, Anergy, and releases music as a solo artist under the name Nox Eterna.
